Matthew Hume

Matt is our fearless leader in all things design and build. His experience began as a teenager from Pavillion, NY, where he worked as a builder/tradesman for his father and built new homes. Matt quickly understood the intricacies of the construction drawing sets on site, which led him to pursue his architectural studies at UB. Since receiving both his bachelor's and master's degrees, some of his work experience has included being a Clinical Professor at UB, a home builder, a business owner, and practicing Architectural Design for large-scale hospitals and educational facilities. During his time as a clinical professor at UB, Matt became a licensed architect in the state of New York, while simultaneously completing a variety of full-scale projects ranging in scale from installations at Art Park to large residences across Western New York. After all of these experiences, Matt took his architecture training, master builder skill set, and business-oriented mind and started his own construction company where he helped homeowners see an initial idea become a reality through design-build. Now over a decade later, his current work days include a lot of planning, coordination, and review to keep all of our projects moving forward. When Matt’s not working or spending time with his family, you might find him hunting, fishing, hiking, kayaking, or boating. A dream project of his would be to fully design and build a multi-family complex.

John Henning

John is our digital design guru from the Catskills area. He most enjoys working on the initial design phase for a house and getting all of the possible solutions out there to then collaboratively work through schematic plans with our clients. John was inspired to work in this field since childhood when he played with Legos and watched the craftsmanship of his father, who has been a builder and carpenter all of his life. Besides working with us part-time during his time at UB, John also gravitated toward the endless possibilities of digital design. He invested countless hours outside of school to learn more software and skill sets that directly transfer into his work now. With experience both on-site and on the computer, John values seeing the intricate details where materials meet and connect during the construction phase. When John is not learning new software, creating beautiful renders, or finishing up CD sets for us, he’s probably off hiking, dog training, playing video games, or saving goals for his soccer team. One day John plans to build his own home off the coast of Maine.

Nicholas Blackwell

Nick is an outdoorsman and a jack of all trades from rural Western New York, where he grew up making things, building treehouses, and discovering what makes the line between the spaces we occupy and nature. Some of his previous work experience includes being a photographer, a machinist, and working at a lumber yard. While receiving his bachelor's and master's degrees in architecture at UB, he also constructed a variety of full-scale build projects and worked alongside our team part-time. Now, with his full-time role as a project designer, Nick enjoys helping our clients design and build their ideas to a level of quality that goes beyond their expectations. His work days are filled with custom building, designing, meeting with homeowners, and capturing beautiful processes and final photos of our work. Nick enjoys everything outdoors, from hunting to mountaineering, rock climbing, and much more. He is also notorious for traveling with some of his favorite locations being Iceland and Big Sky Country Montana. A dream project of Nick’s has always been to design and build a self-sustaining modern off-grid house.

Michael Patchen

Michael is an aspiring architect from Beacon, NY which is located within the Hudson Valley region. He is passionate about sustainable building methods and design-build practices. Growing up in a family of tradesmen instilled in him a hands-on approach and a deep-seated commitment to architectural practice. His undergraduate degree in Interior Design and Masters of Architecture taught him the complexities of building design. This educational background helped him identify that there can be a disconnect between designers and construction experts; he looks for ways to close that gap. As a LEED Green Associate and Certified Passive House Consultant (PHIUS), Michael is committed to creating spaces that are functional and efficient. In his off-time, Michael enjoys connecting with nature and watching the Yankees. Michael’s dream project is to design a fire station and a baseball stadium.
